Certificate of Naturalization
You receive a Certificate of Naturalization if you go through the naturalization application process to become a U.S. citizen. U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS), which is part of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, manages this process
The naturalization process includes submitting an application with all the required documents, providing biometrics, attending an interview with USCIS, and taking the English and civics test. If your application is approved, you will attend a naturalization ceremony where you will take the Oath of Allegiance to the United States of America and receive your certificate.
Certificate of Citizenship
If you were born overseas to U.S. citizen parents, you can usually receive a Certificate of Citizenship. Your status as a U.S. citizen is derived from your parent’s status as a U.S. citizen. The requirements for deriving citizenship will depend on when you were born and if your parents meet certain requirements under U.S. immigration law.
Consular Report of Birth Abroad
If you are a U.S. citizen and your child was born overseas, your child can derive U.S. citizenship if certain requirements are met. You can obtain a Consular Report of Birth Abroad and a U.S. passport for your child as evidence of their U.S. citizenship. The U.S. State Department manages this application process.
